DNA color tests for Lightning
« on: June 30, 2016, 05:22:25 PM »
We got Lightning's DNA test results back today. Holy cow are they fast! We sent to Animal Genetics and the sample arrived yesterday morning. Results were just posted! So.....

We tested Red factor (extension), Agouti and LWO. We already know he is double cream so CrCr and shown no signs of anything else in his foals. He was said to be cremello and it turns out....

He is!

ee aa CrCr  and LWO nn or negative

So Lightning is in fact a cremello with no agouti and safe to breed to any mare. YAY!!!!
A work in progress!

Fabulous!!  Yes, they are very fast, and I think very fair priced, as well.

Good news!!  So, we'll be looking for some babies!

That means your mares colors will be more telling as to what he'll sire for you color-wise.   The only dominant gene he is contributing is cream, so all his foals will be creams of some sort, but depending on the color of the mare you could get quite the rainbow.   Although, any plain black mares he is bred to will produce smokey black foals, which look like plain black foals; which you probably have to register as just black, I don't think the registries have smokey black available as a color since it looks just like black.

Which is why the colors are sometimes so hard to predict when viewing the registries.  In today's world, with the availability of color genetic testing, it is a da*** shame that the true color of a horse can't be put on the registration forms.  Nothing worse, than having a registered "black" horse bred to another registered "black" horse, produce a double dilute cremello, or a smokey cream, smokey black or a palomino.

Just makes me crazy!!!  Such a crap shoot!  The registries need to catch up with color genetics, especially if a horse is tested and the true genetic color combinations and genes have been determined!!  They should have a place for the gene testing to be entered on the forms, at least.  So breeders can know for sure what they are getting.  But at least, a breeder selling to another breeder can at least share the information, and perhaps save some heartache or give pleasure for the possibilities.

That's awesome! I'd love to test meadow for both colour and dwarfism but it won't matter for quite a few years yet lol
