Most times, they are either completely recognizable as appaloosa (visual spots), or they will be solid looking (or pinto spotted), and you won't see true appaloosa markings until the mature a bit. Few of the pintaloosas are born with mottling or sclera, but it develops in a few weeks/months or begins to show signs that make you do a double-take.
I am suspicious, especially if they are on the skin only, but growing out white hair instead of the black you would expect from a black spot. Most times, that's how a fewspot is -- they look totally unspotted, until you shave them down, and see all the spots on the skin. So, I'm going to watch with interest!
