So I decided to email a Haflinger breeder and ask the average length of his newborn foals so I could purchase a proper size blanket. Please give me your opinion on what this person said...

Lack of knowledge, perhaps (at least in this department).  Horses take longer to be able to thermoregulate than cows do when babies; so an early season foal is likely to need a blanket for at least a day or two after birth.   Either they don't have early season foals or they've been lucky.  My March 30 born APHA foal didn't wear a blanket that I can recall, but she was born in CO and it was mild that spring (I don't recall her ever wearing a blanket, but their stall was well bedded).  [She was my first foal, so I also didn't know better, either.]   Mini foals born early season, definitely need blankets for a day or two (usually mother nature equips them well, so many only need a blanket for a day or two while their body adjusts and starts to thermoregulate on it's own).
They may be correct and your foal may never need a blanket, but I don't think I'd want to be caught without one handy for an early season foal.
[As you can see, end of March, no snow.]

I totally agree.  it is better to be "prepared" just in case....than wish you had one.

I know several people here in Florida that blanket their horses.  Since I'm from the Adirondacks, we NEVER blanketed a horse, even in below zero weather.  However, we also never had a foal born in the middle of winter.

The first 24 hours is a hard adjustment for babies to regulate their temperature, and I believe any help we can give them, helps keep them strong and not use up whatever reserves they have after coming through what are sometimes difficult deliveries.  A deeply bedded stall with high enough sides to keep drafts away, are certainly a benefit to the health of any newborn.

I'd get one!

No I totally agree with you guys, he threw me off with his comment. I was kind of shocked actually by what he said. I still plan on buying a blanket, it will be most likely 38-40 degrees at night. I just wondered what you all thought of his email

I've had 6 mini foals born here, they were born in May, June and July; I know a couple wore a blanket their first day or for a couple nights, but I really haven't used blankets that much with mine, and it's probably because I don't have terribly early foals, too cold up here, and I need to wait to even think about foaling til after calving any way, so if I need the calving barn with all the bells and whistles it's available.
Since I've had the minis, I make sure I have blankets available for foals, but haven't used them extensively.  If I remember right, it was rainy when Spotty was born, so he got a blanket at least at night for his first few nights.  They also got shut in the shelter, cause she wouldn't keep him inside.   Bonny got the barn stall, so I can't remember for certain if Bliss wore a blanket or not (I think she did at night, as it was chilly and wet for awhile around the time both were born); as they were in the barn, I wasn't as worried, because she couldn't get wet, I gave her a big fluffy bed and she was happy.

With that one, one size pretty much fits all, so should fit at birth and for awhile after.
